(Some of the best poems ever written came out of suffering. Not being immune to sighs and tears myself, I wrote this poem after a bad day. I also drew inspiration from the 19th century hymn "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy" by Fredrick Faber.)
Promise
There's a power in God's promise
Like the light that made the world.
There's a joy within his judgment
Like a blazing flag unfurled.
For the word of God is greater
Than the word of friend or foe,
And his sympathy is sweeter
Than all raptures here below.
"I will neither leave nor fail you"
Says the Lord of all hearts faint.
"I have sworn and will not waver;
Come to me, my careworn saint."
When the world forebears commitment,
When the best souls say "maybe,"
Still our God will swear his compact,
Still command "abide with me."
When the best we have seems worthless-
All our treasures tossed aside,
Still our God declares "I love you
and all else, I shall provide."
If our friends should see us sighing
And ignore our unseen tears
Still God's word will light and heal us
And dispel our dismal fears.
For there's power in God's promise
Like the light that loved the world,
And there's joy within his judgment
Like a blazing flag unfurled.
